Lima when it got beautiful and Trujillo

The third visit to Lima was somehow different: Lima was nice, it was beautiful even.
We got a nice hostel place, Mart won at a poker tournament and filled up the travel budget (with 35 Peruvian New Soles, check out www.xe.com for an interpretation ;) )
We saw pedestrians interested in art, beautiful sunsets with surfers down on the beach and paragliders sailing down the coastal cliffs.
But we had to go, we're drawn North by Colombia (Cris got her visa, yeah!!!) and went to Trujillo's archaeological sites for a day - and here you see the last picture our camera ever took.
With the fishnet surroundings that will be washed away with the next rain. And the tshirt Cris "borrowed" from her sister.
I am mean, we all know that. But not a borrower >D

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

The nice thing about the days with the hare krishnas: we met really nice travellers and went for yoga every morning at 7 - at the pacific beach.

PS: The guy in the red t-shirt is not Mart, but another traveller looking exactly the same.
PPS: At least the guy looking like Mart tried to do the headstand and didn't run away >D>D>D

Arequipa 4 and Chacra

The red beetle doesn't have a story except that we liked it... it was still on our mind when we got on the night bus to Lima to finally meet the consul. Probably exhausted from holidays, he came in about xx hours late (no exact time, cause Mart had left his Dali watch in the Italian museum ;) ) Is it insulting if we mention the consul also needed assistance reading and writing? But it's true!

We had to wait some more days for the visa, but wanted to do so somewhere nice. We went to a Hare Krishna community at the beach about 60 k north of Lima but first had to pass the pero melancolico (melancholic dog) in the bus station to find the joy of volunteering for just 10 dollars plus food per day sleeping on hard floor.

On the beach we met one of the guys from Islas Ballestas (the shit islands...) again. Fishermen kill them sea lions because they bite through the nets to get fish.

Arequipa

Arequipa, the white town, didn't stun us - until we found the monastery of Santa Catalina.
Look and judge yourself - we were amazed.
Cris was even more in awe when she played harp for the first time...:)

Huacachina 4

Every honeymoon blog needs some cheesy sunset pics >D
We hope you enjoy, because our camera entered self-destruction mode that day... though Mart ate much more sand than the camera. >D >D >D

Huacachina 3

Cris was delighted to find out that sand can be boarded on the belly, too - the nicest option, actually >D

Huacachina 2

Don't expect snowboard with good bindings, but boards with loose straps.

Huacachina

The same day we hurried to Huacachina to do some sandboarding.
Cris was exhausted from plane and bus, but was still in for the sandbuggy drive. Nice scenery!

Shit islands last part and Nazca

But it was nice, there were really many birds. After debarking Cris said goodbye to her friends the pelicans and we went to the national park Paracas. It's a desert - most of Peru's coast is, because the ocean is cold (Humboldt current from Antarctica).
In the evening we went to Nazca, where Cris would take a little Cessna plane for a swift flight over the mysterious lines before they'd get washed away by the rain. (At least we're not the only ones suffering from the weather, ha >D )
The airport was named after an archaelogist from Dresden who investigated on the lines for years, Maria Reiche; I talked to a shaman waiting for Cris; she got back fine and with empty stomach >D

Shit islands 3

But the Guano Islands were not always a mere tourist attraction - they were the main income source for Peru, and a reason for war. In the 18th and 19th century, the guano would be collected and exported as fertilizer. Nowadays, only once in eight years the shit is taken off the islands, and we were in year four after the last cleaning... you can imagine the rest.

Shit islands 2

Martin makes me write beautifully about the animals that we'd seen. Well, they were beautiful, indeed :D. Martin told the people who work with the animals to bring some penguins down from Argentina - what a sweet surprise :D, so, on these islands, I saw the first penguins ever (after Ushuaia). The sea lions were truly sweet and noisy, and lively, as well - not like the one we will feature in the Chacra article. Thousands of birds, also sweet baby birds, I felt like in Hitchcock's film :D. I was truly happy. And Martin bought a Paracas hat in vain, we did not get any excrement dropped on us :D

Dirty Lima and the Shit Islands

When we arrived in Lima after a long bus ride, it was just to get Cris a Colombian visa - as usual the bus was late so we didn't get to see the consul, because "we are working according to some rules" as the guard said before shutting the little window in the front door in our face. The next day we came back to be served after hours of waiting, to be told "the consul is still not here, he will be back next Wednesday, though". So we had a week time to go South, and Mart felt his watch getting heavier, his heart longing for a nice Colombia around his nice Cris... but we tried to have a nice time, still, and went to Pisco. It was hard to adjust to regional customs ("don't pee into the toilet"), but we tried.
Arriving in Pisco, we saw funny cars on and off the track.
Pisco, the town of the national spirit of the same name, was destroyed by an earthquake 6 years ago, so we tried not to judge it.
Instead, we realized our situation (little time and less money) and went to the poor man's Galapagos - also called Islas Ballestas or the Guano Islands. Guano is another word for "white rain falling off birds" (excrementos). A new experience after christmas on the sun island, really.

Cris first played with the pelicans, before we got on the boat. Well, they were trained, that's why they didn't run from her or play dead (remember the smarter animals? the llamas?) until their masters stopped liking Cris and called them away.

Mart was delighted to also see his poor man's Nazca lines, a candelabra of which nobody seems to know anything. But we are used to nobody telling the truth to us gringo tourists, so we think they just don't wanna tell... life is a beach.

Depressed article? Come on, you should visit shit islands, hungry, sick, and on unsafe boats. Just joking. We're having fun writing.
Cris will tell about beautiful animals we saw, now. (Do it, come on. I know, I don't want to do it either.)

Machu Picchu 4

You didn't find the face? No worries, Cris imitates it to ease your life :D
Not funny enough? No worries, the rain and us as Ampelmaennchen should do. Did I mention Cris revenge for the llamas ignoring her? Well, I don't tell how she did it, but I sure am nicer with her since I saw it... ;)
And to make sure you know what Peru is all about, check "the red picture".
